What is a Korean Bathhouse?
If you’ve never been to a communal bathhouse before, you might be in for a surprise when you see that nudity is required. And it takes a certain level of understanding of the traditions surrounding this practice, along with an open mind, to truly respect it and benefit from it. A Korean bathhouse, or jimjilbang, is a gender-segregated, communal bathing tradition that dates back over a thousand years and is still an important cultural practice in Korea today. It’s a wellness space where family and friends gather, indulging in self-care and relaxation while soaking in warm water, receiving a body scrub, or alternating between hot water, cold water, and steam.
Why is Nudity Required in a Korean Bathhouse?
In Korea, communal bathing has deep cultural roots and is seen as a natural, normalized activity. Nudity in these spaces is not sexualized; instead, it’s viewed as part of a shared, respectful wellness experience. It fosters a sense of openness, equality, and comfort within the space. Here are some of the reasons why nudity is expected:
Hygiene
Wearing clothing—especially swimsuits—can carry bacteria, detergents, or oils that compromise the cleanliness of communal baths. Being nude helps maintain the water’s purity and ensures that everyone enters the pools as cleanly as possible after showering thoroughly.
Cultural Norms

Respect for Tradition
Modern Korean bathhouses still follow long-standing customs where full immersion and skin-to-skin therapies (like body scrubs) are part of the ritual. Requiring nudity preserves the authenticity of the jjimjilbang experience.
