Experience a Korean Body Scrub
A Korean body scrub (called “seshin”) is a truly unique experience. During a Korean body scrub, you’ll be lying naked on a table while warm water is splashed on you, and your body is vigorously scrubbed from head to toe by someone until every last dead skin cell has been washed away and what’s left is a shiny new you.
While a Korean body scrub might sound intimidating for many, it’s part of the ordinary, everyday life and culture in Korea. It is an essential aspect of the holistic skincare routine that has made Koreans notorious for having such beautiful, flawless skin.
In Korea, the body scrub is part of life and is often used as a way for families and friends to meet and socialize, with family members often scrubbing each other down. But many others choose to pay an expert body scrub attendant to do the scrubbing for them.
While visiting our sauna, spa, and bath house at King Spa, you may be tempted to overlook the “scrub corner,” but we strongly encourage you to do otherwise – you don’t want to miss out on the truly unique experience that is our body scrub treatment. Trust us – your skin will thank you!
What does a body scrub do?
Body scrubs have been used by many people and cultures around the world for thousands of years as a way to clean the skin and scalp deeply. A body scrub is a great way to eliminate layers of dead skin cells in order to allow healthy, new skin cells to emerge on the surface. This produces healthier, younger-looking skin that feels soft and hydrated. Consistent sessions of body scrubs can help keep your skin healthy and soft for longer.
The Korean tradition of body scrub is known for its many benefits, not just for your skin but also for your health, since it helps to increase blood flow and stimulates the lymphatic system to remove toxins from the body.
What is a Korean body scrub like?
During a Korean scrub treatment, you will be lying completely naked on a table while your scrub attendant (who will be the same gender as you) uses abrasive hand gloves along with a special exfoliating Korean soap to deeply and vigorously exfoliate your skin and remove layers and layers of built-up dead skin cells and dirt. What’s left is glowing skin that feels brand new.
Here’s what the Korean body scrub process looks like:
- You’ll soak naked in hot water for at least 10 minutes (30 minutes is optimal) to open your pores and prepare your skin to be deeply exfoliated.
- Your attendant will bring you to a table where you will lie comfortably (naked), and a cloth will be placed over your eyes to help you relax.
- Your attendant will begin the session by splashing warm water on you and then scrubbing you down with exfoliating gloves (“Korean Italy Towel”) using strong, circular motions. A special Korean exfoliating soap will be used to aid the process and clean the skin.
- Your scalp will be scrubbed, and your hair will be washed.
- Finally, a moisturizing oil will be applied to your skin. And you’re done!
At King Spa, men and women receive body scrubs in separate areas of the spa (located in the spa bath section in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms), and the session lasts 30, 40, or 70 minutes depending on which scrub service you choose.
It’s important to understand that a Korean body scrub is not a modest event – you will be fully naked, and yes, there will be other naked people next to you receiving the same treatment. Korean spas are built on the idea of community, and being nude in the gender-segregated spas is all part of the experience.
Is a body scrub good for you?
There’s a reason why body scrubbing is such a popular activity in Korea – because it’s good for you! Anyone with any skin type can reap the benefits of a Korean body scrub. Those with acne-prone, dry skin or uneven skin tones would especially benefit from receiving this treatment.
Here are some of the important benefits you get from a deeply exfoliating Korean body scrub:
- removes layers of dead skin cells, dry patches, dirt, and impurities from the skin
- stimulates the lymphatic system to release stored toxins
- increases blood circulation
- reduces cellulite
- prevents wrinkles
- lessens skin hyperpigmentation
- helps promote relaxation
How can I get a Korean body scrub?
While you can purchase exfoliating body scrubs and perform an at-home DIY version of a Korean body scrub, it won’t produce the same results because you won’t be able to reach certain areas on your own body that someone else would be able to, and you wouldn’t be able to scrub as deeply on your own body as someone else would be able to. That’s why people choose to receive body scrubs at spas that offer this service, like King Spa.
At King Spa, we take great pride in maintaining and sharing the long-held Korean tradition of body scrubbing in the way it was meant to be. Come by King Spa today and book your body scrub treatment in the men’s or women’s locker room. Make sure to book your scrub treatment at a time that allows you to explore the saunas, pools, and all that King Spa has to offer before receiving the scrub. You’ll also want plenty of time to soak in the hot spa bath before your scrub begins to properly prepare your skin – at least 10-15 minutes.
When you’re ready for your body scrub appointment, come to the spa 20 minutes early and check in with the scrub attendants, then soak in the hot bath for a minimum of 10 minutes. Your body scrub attendant will retrieve you when they are ready to begin.
